Why to visit Rinpung Dzong

Rinpung Dzong is the place to visit if you want to see Bhutanese architecture at its best. 'Fortress on a Heap of Jewels' is the name of this dzong. The Dzong is home to 14 shrines and chapels, making it one of Bhutan's most significant religious sites. The ground outside the dzong is where dancers practise the popular tsechu dance forms. Below the dzong is Nyamai Zam, a traditional wooden bridge that was rebuilt after the original was washed away in a flood in 1969. The Dzong courtyard is open daily, but some places inside are prohibited on weekends.

The majority of the chapels, however, are currently closed to travellers. It is also the seat of the Bhutan Supreme Court, which is located in Paro Town in Western Bhutan. The dzong's ideal position is just another reason why you should not miss it during your stay to Bhutan. Rinpung Dzong is situated on a steep mountain, providing beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. A significant feature is the Nyamai Zam bridge, which spans the Paro Chhu River and is a wonderful place for photographers.

To get to Paro Dzong from any other major attraction or your hotel, you can rent a cab (if the service is provided from that region). The tour guide may assist with transportation to the Dzong. A Degyankha Shrine, located right outside the Paro Dzong, is as sacred as any other temple in Bhutan. Then there's the cantilever bridge that spans Paro Chhu and provides breathtaking vistas.

Special Tip

The Dzong's courtyard and chapels are open to visitors every day except weekends. The optimum time to go is in the second month of the ancient Bhutanese lunar calendar, when there is a sacred festival.
