Why to visit Punakha Dzong
Punakha Dzong literally means "palace of tremendous delight or bliss," and a visit to this dzong will convince you of its significance. It is quite popular with tourists because to its stunning architecture. The structure features traditional Bhutanese and Tibetan architecture and is a visual treat for visitors. Visit during the spring when the dzong's environs bloom with jacaranda trees and lush green hills in the background to see the dzong at its best. The dzong's location at the junction of the Po and Mo Chu Rivers adds to its beauty. This is without a doubt one of the nicest spots to visit in Bhutan.
Punakha Dzong is the country's second-oldest and second-largest dzong. The first national legislature was held here in 1953, and it remained the headquarters of the Bhutanese government until 1955. This dzong is not only a Bhutanese architectural marvel, but it is also culturally significant because it houses precious relics of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism as well as the sacred remains of Ngawang Namgyal, the Tibetan Buddhist teacher and Bhutan's unifier.
It is situated on the banks of the Puna Tsang Chhu, which is formed by the confluence of two rivers. To get to the Dzong complex, one must cross the Bazam bridge. Punakha Dzong is located in Punakha valley, near the junction of the Pho Chuu and Mo Chuu rivers. Paro International Airport is the nearest airport to the valley. It takes about 3 hours to drive northeast from Paro airport to Punakha via Thimpu.
