Why to visit Buddha Dordenma
Buddha Dordenma is the place to go if you're a photographer looking for excellent artworks and appropriate frames in Bhutan. It is a massive golden Shakyamuni Buddha statue built to honour the fourth monarch of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuk's, birthday. The statue is made of bronze with a cover of gold which symbolizes indestructibility. The statue, which stands atop a golden meditation hall in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, overlooks Thimphu's southern gate. Buddhists regard it to be a sacred location. Guru Padmasambhava is said to have referred to this statue as the "second Buddha" in the ninth century.
It stands at 169 feet tall and has 1,25,000 smaller Buddha figurines. The statue was built in 2015 at a cost of about $100 million. Buddha Dordenma is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bhutan. The Shakyamuni Statue is a manifestation of two centuries-old prophecies. The first was when yogi Sonam Zangpo predicted that a great Buddha statue would be created in the region, at a location from which it could bestow blessings and happiness on the entire world. The other was discovered by Terton Pema Lingpa in the 8th century A.D. to radiate a peaceful and happy atmosphere throughout the world.
The Buddha Point is approximately 7 kilometres from Thimphu. You can either take a cab or rent a bicycle and pedal to the spot while admiring the scenery and enjoying the weather.
