Why to visit Tomb of Akbar The Great

Akbar's Tomb, the ultimate resting place of Mughal Emperor Akbar, is located in Sikandra, on the outskirts of Agra, and spans 119 acres. Emperor Akbar oversaw the construction of this monument, which is entirely made of sandstone and white marble, until his death. The Tomb of Akbar, unlike the graves of other renowned Muslim emperors around the world, faces the rising sun rather than the Masjid of Mecca. The main monument is encircled by a lovely garden that was created by Akbar himself. His wife's mausoleum (Mariam-uz-Zamani Begam) is about a kilometre away from Akbar's Tomb in Sikandra. Following Tartarian tradition, which stipulates that one must live through the construction of one's tomb, Akbar lived through the construction of his tomb and created a lovely garden surrounding it.

Special Tip

Foreign visitors who buy an Agra Development Authority toll ticket for the Taj Mahal for INR 500 do not need to buy another toll ticket if they visit Akbar's Tomb the same day.
